With all the warm weather, it almost seems as though winter is passing us by. The BBC had a headline saying that "Winter is cancelled in Europe this year". But never fear, many of the traditional joys of winter are with us!

Most of our clients have year end accounting decisions to make, deadlines to hit for reporting of financial numbers, tax and government filings to be made and the implementation of the budgets which were so painfully put together in late 2006. So we have the old jokes about the CFO's car being the last to leave a deserted car park ...

The December STiFS meeting featured some of the best and brightest in the industry.

In early December Net@Work welcomed STiFS, a series of 2-day participatory meetings of software testers and other QA professionals who work in financial services firms. This 2 day meeting which dealt with Testing Real-Time Distributed Financial Systems was moderated by Lee Mesnekoff, our Director of Development Services.

Participation is by invitation only, and is usually limited to 15 people. Participants are typically a mix of experienced QA or Test Directors, Managers, Leads, Senior Testers and Consultants who have worked in financial firms or have a strong interest in the quality of financial software. Attendees typically walk away from the workshop with fresh ideas and approaches, valuable hints and tricks, and contact names of leading industry colleagues to network and share ideas.

The next STiFS workshop is scheduled for June 2007, details to follow.

In the Forrester Wave™ SSL VPN Appliances report for the fourth quarter 2006 (December 2006), Forrester Research placed Citrix Access Gateway solidly in the Leader category, giving the highest score for Citrix's strengths in reliability, performance, monitoring and reporting, as well as revenue growth and channel partner depth. Forrester provides an overview of the evolution of the SSL VPN market, from a onetime means to provide e-mail to remote workers to today's sophisticated access method to applications for traveling employees, partners, suppliers and vendors. SSL VPNs offer a valuable remote access alternative to protect against natural and man-made workforce disruptions. Forrester evaluated Citrix Access Gateway Enterprise Edition across 57 criteria and against 7 other SSL VPN vendors.

There used to be two certainties in life; death and taxes. In the business environment there are two certainties as well; taxes and software upgrades. When small and medium size business began to deploy technology in the early 1990's some of the biggest worries were related to operating systems and applications. In most mid-size companies IT executives are focused on day to day operations, and do not have a budget for support staff or long term strategic thinking. They therefore "pick" at due diligence over time, creating inefficiencies in documentation and process flow.
